You never know who's going to turn up in one of Niles Reddick's stories.... a lapsed evangelist working as a motel night clerk, a bargain-hunting father, an aunt who makes peroxide tea, or a seventeen-year-old girl just admitted to a mental hospital.... not to mention wild dogs, snakes, and UFOs! Each one of these short, down-to-earth and often surprising stories packs a considerable punch. Reddick's characteristic humor allows for some revelations as well. Lee Smith, North Carolina author of several works of fiction including Family Linen, Fair and Tender Ladies, Saving Grace, The Last Girls, and her most recent novel, On Agate Hill.
Niles Reddick gets my vote as the funniest, most peculiar man alive. He's a bargain-hunting nut and very fine storyteller. I'm so glad he's finally put his stories down on paper for others to read. Janice Daugharty, Georgia author of several novels including her most recent, Just Doll. Daugharty is writer in residence at Valdosta State University.
A fast and funny read. Very funny. I laughed out loud more times than I can count. The voice here is quirky, manic, and absolutely original. With one foot in the rural past and another in the strip mall world of the New South, Reddick is exploring new territory here. Read this book. There is nothing else out there remotely like it. Inman Majors, author of two novels. His latest is Wonderdog. Majors teaches creative writing at James Madison University in Virginia. |
